FUNCTIONAL ELECTRIC STIMULATION AND FOOT DROP TREATMENT
The clinical case known as foot drop is a case where the foot is lost control of due to a damage in the neurological system that controls the ankle movement, and is dragged when walking. Foot drop develops as a result of many cases such as sciatic nerve damage, lumbar hernia, hemiplegia or paralysis related to Multiple Sclerosis, nerve damage due to diabetes.
With today's technology, a number of devices have been developed to control foot drop. The functional electric stimulator known as Walkaide has shown very successful results, especially in foot drop related to hemiplegia and multiple sclerosis. In the last few years, children's models that are used in Cerebral Palsy related foot drop have been developed.(Visit Link.)
Prof. Yılmaz has been trained to use these devices and has become the first physician to apply Walkaide in Turkey. At present, Prof. Yilmaz has over 50 patients who are users of the device.
By using silicone ankle ortheses, maximum quality of life and walking support is supplied to patients with foot drop related to nerve damage. In this field, we are working with the British firm Dorset, and we apply ready- or custom-made ortheses known as SAFO.(Visit Link)
